PETULIA MATTIOLI: 30 yrs of Album Cover Art, Music Videos and Beyond!
Exhibition text by MARCO PIERINI | Contemporary Art Museum Curator and Councillor for Culture in Perugia, Italy
8 - 11 MAY
Copeland Gallery Peckham London
This dynamic exhibition explores the multifaceted career of Petulia Mattioli, an acclaimed Italian graphic designer and visual artist known for her groundbreaking collaborations with musicians from across the globe. Through iconic record covers, multimedia projects, and live visuals, Mattioli has contributed to the aesthetic of the independent music scene
while also engaging with editorial and social activism. Her work has been showcased in museums, theatres, and galleries across Europe, the USA, Canada, and Japan, reflecting her deep influence on contemporary visual culture.
More than a retrospective, this exhibition reveals the experimental nature of Mattioli’s work, tracing her artistic evolution through sculpture, photography, graphic design, videos, and live visuals. A key focus is the exploration of unconventional techniques and photographic processes that define her experimental approach, enhancing its narrative.
Many of her works emerged from low-budget, independent collaborations, where creativity took precedence over technology. Through the use of unexpected materials, simple tools, and artistic “tricks,” she has shaped a distinctive creative signature, one that embraces imperfection, resourcefulness, and raw artistic expression.
The exhibition also showcases some works in their experimental stage, allowing visitors to see pieces before they were finalised, thus offering insight into the creative process and the evolution of ideas.
A 'listening corner' will be dedicated to the labels with whom she has collaborated chiefly, like RareNoise Records, London and Subsound Records, Italy, encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in the soundscapes that inspired Mattioli's photography and graphics, creating a deeper connection between sound and image.
Students are encouraged to visit the exhibition where Mattioli will be present to explore and discuss the "how-to" details of the artworks.
